In mythological time the name of the island was Letois. Letios was another name for the goddess Diana, (daughter of Leto) who the inhabitants believed the island owed its existence to.
According to some , Patmos was ounce called Palmosa, relating the island as a place made of palm trees. According to another myth, the island took its name because of Neptune when he stepped on it (step: patima), thus the island was called at first "Patnos" and later " Patmos ".
